The story of Marchesi di Barolo intertwines with the rich heritage of Barolo wine and Italy’s viticultural history. It began in the early 19th century when Marquise Juliette Colbert of Maulévrier, a French noblewoman, married Marquis Carlo Tancredi Falletti, a prominent figure in Piedmont. This union united two influential families and laid the foundation for one of Italy’s most prestigious wine producers.

Juliette, a visionary philanthropist, recognized the potential of the Nebbiolo grape from the Langhe hills. She refined winemaking techniques to craft a wine of exceptional quality. Under her influence, Barolo gained its reputation for elegance, complexity, and longevity, earning the title “Wine of Kings and King of Wines” by the mid-19th century—a moniker it retains to this day.

After the last Falletti descendant passed in 1864, the estate changed hands until the Abbona family acquired it in 1929. Deeply rooted in the Langhe region, the Abbonas revitalized the estate while respecting its traditions. They preserved Juliette’s vision, crafting wines that honor the land’s heritage using both traditional and modern techniques. The estate’s prized vineyards include the renowned Cannubi cru, celebrated for its wines of exceptional depth and character.

Under the Abbona family’s stewardship, Marchesi di Barolo has flourished as a symbol of Italian winemaking excellence. Today, it is globally recognized for its commitment to quality and sustainability. While producing a diverse portfolio of wines, Barolo remains its crown jewel, embodying the estate’s storied past and promising future.

Marchesi di Barolo’s story transcends wine; it is a tale of passion, innovation, and an unwavering pursuit of excellence. It stands as a testament to a family and region that have left an indelible mark on the world of wine.
